Starting locum work in South Africa involves more than simply showing up to your first shift. Before any reputable agency can place you, your HPCSA registration must be current, your documentation in order, and your tax affairs properly set up.

Once you are placed, the first week often follows a pattern that many new locums do not anticipate. Booking frequency may be slower than expected, every facility will have its own systems and processes, and building rapport with nursing and administrative staff can have a significant impact on how smoothly your placements run.

This guide covers everything from pre-placement compliance and registration requirements to what you can expect during your first week on site. It also highlights the three mistakes new locums most commonly make - and how to avoid them.

Unfilled ICU beds in South Africa don’t just reflect a shortage of space - they reveal the hidden costs of understaffing. From spiraling overtime and burnout to lost revenue in private hospitals and reduced capacity in public facilities, the impact is severe.

Filling vacancies with HPCSA‑verified locums offers a safer, more cost-effective solution that protects both patients and staff.

For South African healthcare professionals, the financial case for locum work is built on the foundation of 'direct value.' By cutting out the administrative overheads of running a private practice or the rigid salary scales of the public sector, locums can often achieve a higher hourly rate.
